Deviated
Septum

A condition where the nasal bone and cartilage within the nasal cavity is significantly off centered or crooked.  The most common sign of a deviated septum is difficulty breathing through the nose during exercise, activities of daily life and nasal obstruction while sleeping.

Symptoms of Deviated Septum

  • Obstruction of nostrils
  • Nosebleeds
  • Noisy breathing awake or during sleep
  • Awareness of nasal cycle
  • Post nasal drip
  • Facial pain

When Should I See A Doctor?

While many of the symptoms are common issues affecting most people in one form or another, it is important to know when a deviated septum is serious and requires medical attention:

  1. Frequent nosebleeds
  2. Inability to get a good night’s rest
  3. Recurring sinus infections
  4. Blocked nostrils that are not responding to treatment

What Are The Treatment Options?

Treatment of a deviated septum defers based on the severity.  If your deviated septum is minor, medication may be the best approach.  Different medications can be used to help manage your symptoms either by reducing the nasal tissue swelling or relieving allergy related causes.

If medication proves to be ineffective in relieving the symptoms of your deviated septum, one of our doctors may recommend to surgically repair the abnormality.  The procedure will be performed by one of our doctors and would require the reshaping and repositioning of the cartilage and bone to address the deviation and help improve your quality of life.
